Key Ingredients

Banaba:

  1. Banaba is an herbal remedy extracted from the leaves of Lagerstroemia speciosa, a tree native to Southeast Asia. Long used in folk medicine, banaba is now available in supplement form. Proponents claim that banaba can promote weight loss and treat a wide range of health problems.
  2. Banaba may help control diabetes.  Treating diabetic mice with banaba extract helped protect against elevated blood sugar levels. In addition, banaba appeared to reduce total cholesterol levels.

Guggul:

  • Guggul, also known as guggulu and guggulipid, is a substance secreted by the mukul myrrh tree (Commiphora mukul) after it has been injured. It has been used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to treat obesity, osteoarthritis, and some skin conditions. Recently, research has suggested that guggul also may lower total cholesterol levels, especially triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. The method by which guggul lowers cholesterol is not totally understood, however, there have been many mechanisms proposed. These mechanisms include blocking cholesterol synthesis and increasing removal of LDL cholesterol.

Bitter Melon:

  1. Bitter melon is a fruit that can be found in many Asian grocery stores. As its name suggests, the fruit tastes very bitter. It's also available in liquid extract and capsule forms.
  2. Bitter Melon may play a role in controlling the production of insulin by the body, thus promoting blood sugar control.

Licorice Extract:

  1. Licorice is a plant. You are probably most familiar with it as a flavoring in foods, beverages, and tobacco. The root is used to make medicine.
  2. Weight loss. There is conflicting information about the use of licorice for weight loss. Licorice seems to reduce body fat. However, it causes water retention that can offset any change in body weight.

Cinnamon:

  • In traditional medicine, cinnamon has been used for digestive ailments such as indigestion, gas and bloating, stomach upset, and diarrhea. More recently, modern medical research has turned its eye on cinnamon and is coming up with some intriguing results. It has a mild anti-inflammatory effect. It also slows the spoiling of food (which is probably related to why it was used as an embalming agent in ancient Egypt), and has anti-fungal properties as well.
  • In one fun (but unpublished) study, researchers found that sniffing cinnamon resulted in improved brain function -- subjects did better on memory and attention tasks when taking whiffs of cinnamon as opposed to other odors or no odor. However, the potential health benefits of cinnamon that have received the most attention have to do with its effects on blood glucose and cholesterol.
  • Cinnamon may lower blood glucose, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol in people with Type 2 diabetes.

Gymnema Sylvestre:

  1. Gymnema (scientific names Gymnema sylvestre) is a plant that’s been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. The extract from the plant’s flowers, leaves and fruits are thought to have anti-allergic, antiviral and lipid-decreasing properties. Gymnema is mainly used to manage and treat conditions associated with blood-sugar levels, such as diabetes mellitus and related hypo- or hyperglycemic conditions. Additionally, Gymnema has shown effectiveness in treating a range of different ailments.
  2. Gymnema’s hypoglycemic properties can help regulate blood sugar levels by enhancing the cells consumption of glucose and boosting the actions of glucose using enzymes, inhibiting the liver from making glucose and thus decreasing blood sugar levels.
  3. Gymnema can also be used to treat stomach and gastrointestinal disorders, constipation, water retention, cholesterol, high or low blood pressure, anemia, liver disease, tachycardia, arrhythmia and weight gain.

Huckleberry:

  1. Huckleberry is a name used in North America for several plants in the family Ericaceae, in two closely related genera: Vaccinium and Gaylussacia. The huckleberry is the state fruit of Idaho.
  2. Huckleberries are associated with lowering cholesterol; protecting against heart diseases, muscular degeneration, glaucoma, varicose veins, and peptic ulcers.
  3. High in vitamin C, Huckleberries protect the body against immune deficiencies, cardiovascular diseases, prenatal health problems, and eye diseases.

Vanadyl Sulfate:

  • For blood sugar support is the trace mineral, vanadyl sulfate. It mimics the action of insulin, helping to usher glucose into your cells and steady your blood sugar and A1C levels.
  • In one study, subjects experienced greater insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake, with a 15% decrease in fasting glucose levels. The great deal of success with vanadyl sulfate supporting normal blood sugar levels for patients.

Alpha Lipoic Acid:

  1. Alpha lipoic acid is a fatty acid found naturally inside every cell in the body. It's needed by the body to produce the energy for our body's normal functions. Alpha lipoic acid converts glucose (blood sugar) into energy. Other names for it include lipoic acid, thioctic acid, and ALA.
  2. Alpha lipoic acid is also an antioxidant, a substance that neutralizes potentially harmful chemicals called free radicals. What makes alpha lipoic acid unique is that it functions in water and fat, unlike the more common antioxidants vitamins C and vitamin E, and it appears to be able to recycle antioxidants such as vitamin C and glutathione after they have been used up. Glutathione is an important antioxidant that helps the body eliminate potentially harmful substances. Alpha lipoic acid increases the formation of glutathione.
  3. Alpha lipoic acid has been suggested for cataracts, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, tinnitus, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, acne, rosacea, weight loss, vitligo, skin aging, grey hair, tinnitus, restless leg syndrome, gastroparesis and hepatitis C, but large, well-designed studies are needed to see if it's effective for these conditions.

L-Taurine:

  1. L-taurine, also referred to simply as taurine, is a non-essential amino acid. It is considered non-essential because adults can produce taurine, and it is found in meat, fish and dairy products. Taurine has a role in dozens of your bodily functions and is beneficial in both healthy and diseased states.
  2. Heart Function: Taurine plays an important role in many aspects of your cardiovascular system. This amino acid helps to move key nutrients, such as potassium, magnesium and calcium, in and out of your heart's cells to improve its functioning. Low levels of taurine have been found in patients who suffered a heart attack. Haas discusses the use of taurine in Japan for sufferers of ischemic heart disease. Multiple daily doses of taurine improved cardiac function in patients suffering from a variety of chronic heart conditions, such as arrhythmia, congestive heart failure and heart attacks.
  3. Vasodilation: Taurine supplementation can increase secretion of nitric oxide, which dilates your blood vessels and improves blood flow and delivery of oxygen to your muscles.
  4. Lower Cholesterol: Taurine can lower your cholesterol by improving gallbladder function which can then eliminate cholesterol through bile, according to Haas. The taurine supplementation reduced liver and blood cholesterol levels in the treated group.
  5. Antioxidant: Free radicals attack cells in your body and can cause chronic conditions such as cancer, eye disease, and possibly diabetes. Taurine can help to protect your body from free radical damage, as noted by both Nakaya and Haas.
